Herrad of Landsberg

Herrad of Landsberg
- Hortus Deliciarum

Herrad of Landsberg (* 1125/30, † 25.7. 1195) was 1167-95 abtess of the Chorfrauenstift in Hohenburg (Alsace) and she is known as writer and illustrator of the "Hortus deliciarum" ("Garden of delights", ca. 1180), one of the best miniatured works in medieval time (a sort of early encyclopedia for nuns in Latin language). It contains parts of the bible, writings of the church fathers and other writers of the church, also poems of Herrad and other poets. It had 324 pages and 344 worthful miniatures, but the original was partly destroyed in Strassburg in the German/French war of 1870.

Edition: A. Straub / G. Keller, Strassburg 1879-1899 (with copies of the most miniatures)
